Exam Writing Tips

The thought of writing the exam makes many students nervous. A reasonable amount of anxiety is a good thing. It shows that you’re taking the exams seriously, and gives you enough of an adrenaline burst to keep you in form and alert when you need to be.

At The Heritage School – one of the best schools in Dehradun, we don’t let nervous tension cross the limit to the point that you forget everything on which you’ve spent so much time and effort revising! The exams should be approached with a cool head. After all the multiple revisions, what matters is how you write the exams.

Here are some tips to help you ensure that you’re doing the best you can:

Practice Previous year Question Papers

There is no better way to understand how the questions might come than by actually solving the previous year question papers. This gives the exact idea that in which form the questions will come.

Read all the Questions Carefully

The stress of the situation can cause you to misread a question, plan out the answer. Even though you generally won’t be writing answers to every question on the paper, reading all questions thoroughly will ensure you make the right choices and can highlight how much you know about the topic.

Manage your Time

Before you start writing  the answer, make sure you keep an eye on the clock and not run out of time. What generally happens is that students tend to put more time while writing the first answer and run out of time for the last question.

Structure your Answer

Once you have read the questions, start planning out your answers. Give at least 2-3 minutes to structure out what points you need to mention in the answer. The answer needs to have an introduction, main points, and a conclusion.

Explore both sides of the Argument

While answering a question, especially from the critical point of view; make sure you explore both the sides of the argument in different paragraphs while writing your answer and then mention what you have learned at the conclusion.

Use as many examples as Possible

Mentioning examples in the answers make your answer more presentable and gives an impression to the examiner that you have understood the topic well. This usually works with topics in Science.

Review your answers Thoroughly

Proofread your answers as much you can. Make sure you have at least 8-10 minutes to go through the answers. Correct any spelling mistakes or add any extra comments worth mentioning.

At The Heritage School – Best ICSE School in Dehradun, we remind students that the exams are not designed to trick you. Don’t panic on the day of your exam as this can cause the brain freeze. Convince yourself that you know how to answer exam questions and you're almost there. Best of luck!
